Rapid Penang ICIS
48 Tweet
The future of public transportation in Malaysia begins in Penang. But why not Kuala Lumpur as the capital of Malaysia? I’ve received an email from Rapid Penang regarding their new Intelligent Commuter Information System (Rapid ICIS).
With Rapid ICIS, you now have the convenience of knowing how many minutes away your bus is from the bus stop, thereby allowing you to plan your journey better. Simply call the Rapid ICIS hotline at 04-238 1313 to obtain bus arrival time estimation on a real time basis! The hotline operates from 5.30am till midnight daily. (Source: ‘Hello, hello, when is my bus coming?’)
Why ICIS is cool?
I found it very cool because we can plan our journey with buses. I really hate it when I have to wait for more than 30 minutes for shuttle bus back and forth to UIA.
Why not Rapid KL?
I’m not in the position to answer this. But I can say that this ICIS is a pilot project a.k.a experimental. They want to ensure that this service is useful and beneficial to all Penangites. If its works, I hope Rapid KL can introduce this service for KLites. KL needs a better system because it has complex train, bus and taxi system unlike Penang. Besides, the population and traffic is one of the major cause why ICIS are not in KL (yet).
Poor promotion
It’s a good way to educate people to use public transportation. However in term of promotion, it is very poor. It was launched on 30th August but I never know about it until I received the email. I also don’t read NST about this article. By the way, the promotional voucher at the back of the bus ticket is absolutely cool advertising from Sunshine Mall. (It reminds me of Giant Hypermarket receipt long time ago). Maybe they can promote this service by using the tickets. By the time I publish this entry, there’s no specific promotion inside the Rapid Penang website.
Check out the launching montage for the Rapid ICIS.
From the video, it looks like ICIS is using Google Earth technology for the GPS system. Actually it was provided by Cybertowers Berhad. By the way, KL has a better system called ITIS. You can watch real time traffic on the web. KL ITIS vs Penang ICIS, which one’s better?

rapid penang service.. what do think???
thanks for visiting my blog. i’ve posted few entries about rapid penang inside my blog. if I want to compare with Rapid KL, I’d love if there’s a single ticket for one day. that’s good enough for me.

bas rapid penang tu boleh kurangkan kesesakan kat penang ka?
kesesakan tu memang tak dapat nak elak tapi kalau ramai orang penang guna bas, mungkin kesesakan tu bleh dikurangkan..

This technology has been in existence for quite sometimes, I think. I was in Vienna, Austria back in 2003 and I was amazed with how efficient their public transport there. It just “Wowed” me ! I waited for my bus [ e.g. Bus No. 6], and there was a signboard that informed me how many minutes [Bus No. 6] would arrive at that particular bus stop, and will keep me updated by minutes. e.g. 10 mins, 9 mins. 10 mins..5 mins, 14 seconds, 5 seconds….and on the dot , voila ! my bus was there picking up the passengers. Something to learn from Austrian government, and if it possible to be implemented there, why not in Kuala Lumpur. Of course the authority will say, no ..this can’t be done here, our road is bla bla bla, our system bla bla bla, it is expensive, bla bla bla..but as a Malaysian, I do not take “NO” as an answer, as simple as that
I could not agree more with Adlan. We shall have a single ticket for all RapidKL, KTM Commuter, Monorel, ERL , buses and the upcoming train projects. Can’t be done ? Again, I can’t accept NO as an answer
Friends of mine from Romania and Morocco did visit Kuala Lumpur recently [ during Eid], and they said ” Kuala Lumpur is a nice city, but what I can’t stand is the fact that I have to keep coming to counters to buy train tickets for short journeys. Can we have like 1 day , 3 days, 11 days ticket [ not only for 1 month ] with discount similar to London, Paris and other major cities ? Again, I can’t accept NO as an answer.
We shall emulate best practices of public transportation in the world. Like mentiones by Senator Idris Jala, CEO of PEMANDU recently, that we shall put the system in order first, get the buy in and confidence from the public [ integrated, reliability, efficient] public transportation system, and then we talk about the pricing and making money, as we do not want public transportation as money losing business similar to that other part of the world !!. Malaysians are creative lots, and we shall take NO as an answer, and always striving to achieve the impossible !
Just my 2-cents view…….

Hi Eone. Thanks for your informative sharing.
Just in case you haven’t ride the bus lately, RapidKL has offer monthly RapidPass for all the public transport services. For instance, for all buses service only, it cost RM100 monthly. The same goes for integrated Bus, LRT and Monorail system. I’m not sure how much but frequent commuters should get this pass to save time and money.
For more info about RapidPass, check this website http://www.rapidkl.com.my/tickets-fares/monthly-travel-card
Back to your first point, I hope in the near future, they can implement the best practise and technology into the public transport system in KL. Why they can have it in Penang and not in KL, right?
