Another new toy – Garmin Nuvi 205

Salam. I just bought GPS device Garmin Nuvi 205 on September 26th. It cost me RM525 from Mudah.my. At first, I’m thinking of buying other brand but when I’ve seen my friend, Faizal used Garmin, I can’t wait any longer.

Over the last four weekends, I went to lots of Raya open houses and wedding ceremonies. So, I totally rely on my GPS to show me the right path (Ihdinas sirotol mustaqim). Among other cool features that I love is the ability to show me the faster route, shorter distance, avoiding traffic (lights) or toll plaza, fuel consumption as well as arrival time. So, after few weeks of using the GPS, here’s my review.

Its distracting!

Safety first, GPS second. GPS is quite addictive and distracting. Eyes should be on the road and not on the device. It takes sometime to familiarize with it while driving and keeping a safe distance.

Relation of money and time

Malay proverb call it ‘Masa itu emas’. That’s to illustrate the importance of GPS. Just refer to the graph below.

Shorter time cost more in term of fuel consumption and paying ticket at toll plaza. Longer time will cost the same as you have to travel in traffic jams in order to use shorter route.

For example, when you are using highway, you have to pay for the ticket but you can reach the destination earlier. This can provide peace of mind and reduce stress. However, if you are not using highway, you’ll have to waste some time at the traffic light and fuel especially at traffic congestion. Most people will become stressful when stuck in traffic jam, isn’t it?

Doa Naik Kenderaan

Lastly, I just want to share Doa Naik Kenderaan or prayer when riding a vehicle for all Muslim GPS users. In Nuvi205, I can change the welcoming screen image. I choose to put this image so that I’ll remember to pray before I hit the road. As I mention earlier, GPS is distracting and let’s pray so that we can arrive at the destination safely.

Recommendations

Among other features that I’m looking forward in the future GPS gadgets are:

  • Integrate with ITIS system in KL: to identify congested roads
  • Traffic light countdown timer: 120 seconds is the longest duration for a single red light.
  • Kiblat direction: To show the most precise direction of Kaabah in Makkah

My last word is that you should get a GPS device if you want to save your time, save your money (in case you are lost) and for all guys who naturally hate to ask others for direction! Wassalam.
