Election 'Pooling' Day? Spotted at IIUM Mosque
IIUM campus election 2009 was conducted on 22nd January 2009. There’s just too many issues that happens during the election. So, let me just recap for the whole 4 years in IIUM on what I’ve observed as a design student who just don’t care about the ‘nasty’ campus politic.
KAED students don’t care about election
From the number of votes on the last election, I can say that only 803 students had casted their votes. My assumption was like this.
50 students (each studio) x 4 batches x 5 departments = 1000 students
Actually, there are more than 1000 KAED students but when I’ve asked my friends, they don’t really care to vote. I was like, “Hey, its your final year and your last chance to vote, what are you waiting for? Just vote ‘cos you have nothing to lose!”
AED Constituency for SRC
2006 – Bro. Ashari & Bro. Kawa
2007 – Sis. Nik & Sis. Hana
2008 – Bro. Fadhli & Bro. Syakir
2009 – Bro. Fariz & Bro. Azwan

Other universities call it as Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar (MPP). In IIUM, we call it Students Representative Council (SRC). Since KAED students just don’t really care about the politic, so all candidates won uncontested in 2006 and 2007. I’ve never voted for AED candidates until 2008. I only vote for the International candidates.
Pro-Mahasiswa vs Pro-Aspirasi
I’ve started to familiar with these term when I’m started to follow the campus politic in 2008. Pro-Mahasiswa is WUFI (We Unite For Islam) and I can say that they are the supporters of PAS (but not all support PKR). On the other hand, Pro-Aspirasi candidates are those who support UMNO and BN government. Both parties have different ideologies and that’s the reason why they fight.
Manifesto
Personally I can tell which candidate is sponsored and self-sponsored (neutral) based on their manifesto fliers. Usually, the sponsored one (Pro-M or Pro-A) will have a colourful manifesto (but such a waste when its poorly designed). But candidates who don’t have any sponsor will have to use their own money for their campaign. That’s why most of their manifesto is in black and white photocopy.
Clubs & Societies may influence students’ political views
There are some clubs in IIUM, that may influence the political views of a student. For instance, most Maaruf Club members are Pro-M and most GPMS members are Pro-A. But for me, AKHI Club is not a political based club. All of us mixed together with no regards of political views in order to achieve our objective.
Taaruf Week
After six times joining Taaruf, I can say that there are only a small number of WUFI or Pro-M students that joined as a committee. Other committees are neutral and some might be a Pro-A because they have a good connection with the administrators.
Harapan vs Teropong
These are the official newsletter that is actively distributed during election campaign. Harapan comes from Pro-M and Teropong comes from Pro-A supporters. Harapan has their official blog here. But all I can say is that, these two flyers are totally unethical. They will keep on fighting and attack on each others. Its hard to tell which is a fact, fiction or rumours. But I enjoy reading both as a joke.
Well, its quite a long entry. I’d like to mention again, these information is totally based on my observation, experience and some flyers throught out 4 years in the university. And finally, I just don’t care about who wins, Pro-A or Pro-M. As far as I concern, not all candidates manage to fulfill their manifesto anyway.

Actually, aku x rasa Pilihan Raya Kampus ni mcm satu big event pon. Aku rasa parti2 yg bertanding (ProM and ProA) yg merperbesar2 issue. Sbb aper dorg xsefahaman pon aku xpaham. Haih~

yea,personally,i never like politics ni..more fuss than work done..(in my opinion)-no offence.
but politics plays a certain role and it is important..i dont like politics but i need to know how to ‘deal’ with politicians..
and in my opinion if you want to get students interested in politics campaign,people running the campaign should change their approach…

…in my uni, slalu kalau ade mcm ape2 yg nak suruh student jwb questionaire ke, benda2 yg slalu student malas buat, diorang slalu kasi reward utk soh org buat jugak HAHAHAHAHAHA
slalunya diorang kasi kitorang free duit print utk 100 pages something like that hehe
time i 1st yr, nak jadi student rep (utk 2nd, 3rd, 4th y) kena win tru votes
tp taun ni dah xyah haha
diorang guna student rep from previous yr utk continue je
so aku pun TERjadi student rep utk 2 taun hahahaha

wah. tahniah la da jadi students rep selama 2 tahun. nampak sangat diorang tak amek pusing pasal pilihanraya.
takpun 2 tahun merupakan tempoh yg sesuai utk kita melaksanakan tanggungjawab. setahun kejap je rasa..

salam..actually,mahasiswa sekarang kurang cakna tentang isu politik baik politik nasional apatah lagi politk antarabangsa..agak2 pada pendapat adlan,apa cara untuk di wat supaya students IPT especially IIUM ni dapat political education dan peka isu politik?penting tak penting mahasiswa ni,masyarakat kat luar tengok mahasiswa sebagai jurubicara ummah..kadang2 sedih tengok students uia espcecially dak kaed yang agak mengamalkan prinsip ‘aku tidak pedulisma’..neway,kagum dgn adlan yang stabil dlm semua segi:)semoga dapat grad dengan jayanya,insyaallah

rasanya environment dan kawan2 kita banyak mempengaruhi cara pemikiran seseorang. dalam konteks student kaed ni, rata2 tak ambil peduli sebab mereka tak nampak kepentingannya terhadap diri sendiri.
walaupun admin UIA cakap nak denda, tapi tetap takde sebarang kesan sebab peratus mengundi still rendah.
so, maybe cara terbaik, bermula dalam diri kita sendiri. kita sampaikan apa yang kita tahu kepada kawan2 seperti golongan di atas. lambat laun maybe mereka akan jadi lebih prihatin dengan politik dan isu semasa.
kalau tak camne nak jadi pemimpin kat luar sana kan. isu semasa pun tak tau..

Years after years these so called “voice of the people” claims that they have the students supporting them from behind.
The thing is, I can’t actually see what both parties have done except talking a lot.
Parking lots problems, excessive coupling(serious ones i mean) or even getting IIUM students to be exposed to the outside world are not done.
Im afraid this sort of behaviours by this so called ‘ student leaders’ would only deter the real one that wants to deliver for the betterment of us all would shy away thus leaving of these people that have political interests.

Well, we cannot generalize all the representative that way. But I think some of them believe that they want to serve the students.
We wouldn’t know unless we are in their position. Let’s always think good of the past leaders (husnuzzon).
They might have tried their best but due to some limitation and pressure from the admin, they cannot do anything. Maybe that’s how it works.
By right, if the ‘real one’ wants to serve the students, he/she should start from now onwards. Building good reputation, network among students and I believe, he/she will be chosen. Regards of his/her political view.
