Degree Project and Studio 13

Salam to all readers and friends. Today, I just want to share with you guys what I’ve been through for the past three months especially regarding my Degree Project and also the life in Studio 13.

Degree Project

Degree Project is the official term for design students’ final year project. Other Kulliyahs use Final Year Project (FYP) as their project’s name.

Industrial Design (IDE) Project

For IDE students, we have to design two different products. Furniture design is a must and the second one, students can choose to design a product or a transportation. So for the furniture design, I’ve decided to design a bed. For the product design, I’ve decided to design a wheelchair.

Empoq: Multi-purpose Wall Bed System

The main concept of the bed design is foldability, flat pack and space saving furniture. Credits to Fakhul for suggesting the name for my bed which is Empoq. It derives from Malay term ’empuk’ which is comfy. It looks like a horizontal wall bed system with additional sliding table.

These are the sketches that I’ve produced during the design development stage.

Haraqa: Personal Mobility for Hajj

Haraqa is an electrical wheelchair designed for the Hajj purpose. The main concept is functional, versatility and transformability. Since I’m a big fan of Transformers, that’s why I think I should put this concept into my design as well.

Actually the name was ‘Harakah’ which means movement. I’ve chosen this name because during Hajj, it involves many movements such as going to Arafah, Muzdalifah, Mina as well as performing Tawaf and Sa’i. Due to the incident of KDN banning Harakah newspaper, my lecturer also asked me to change the name. That’s why it is called as Haraqa. These are the initial sketches of the concept wheelchair design.

Studio 13

I’ve been staying in the studio for the last 3 months. Well, most KAED student will experience the same thing. I pretty like the number 13 because last year, we are having the 3belas Futurama, so 13 is the lucky number this time!

Since we don’t need large drafting tables inside our studio, the department has installed office partition system in our studio. So, everyone got their one suite space to put theirbooks and PC or laptops. Here’s the picture of my workstation. Credits to Siti Latifah.

Studio mates

Working together with my studio mates makes me value the relationship among us. I guess, for the past 3 months, I’ve started to understand their personalities.
Actually I prefer doing my work alone in my room. Since I’ll have to go to workshop to do the models, I can’t afford to waste time and mess my room. That’s the only reason why I stay in the studio.

Basically, the main concept of working in studio isteamwork and togetherness. If you want to do your work in the studio, you should help your friends who needs help. After all, we want to graduate together right?

I’m sorry because sometimes I’m a bit selfish but I’ve tried to help whenever I can. Nobody’s perfect. I will always remember the memories inside the studio.

I guess that’s all for now. The next entry will be about the Degree Show, the final exhibition of students’ project.

  2. Love your Haraqa. It’s useful for the pilgrims and if your design becomes real, there is a big potential to market it in Saudi Arabia. People always there in Makkah especially the disabled and old people, so they need an efficient design all the time. Keep up! =)

    1. Yeah. I’ve seen the potential. That’s why I want to do the design. The main thing is the concept. If only I can be a part of the big project, I can make big bucks! Hehe.. Thanx
