Salam. Last week, I went to IIUM to discuss about the future direction of Industrial Design program in Kulliyah of Architecture & Environmental Design. It has been 6 years since it was established back in 2004.
However, most of the students in IIUM and people in Malaysia don’t really understand what is industrial design is all about. Currently, I’m not working as industrial designer but I just want to share few things that you should know about Industrial Design.
Can you tell me who design these things? Is it engineer? Manufacturer? Designer?
The answer is absolutely designer. However, there are few types of designer. There are graphic designer, web designer, multimedia designer and many more. For these kind of products, there are industrial designer.
Is there any specific field for industrial designer?
After few years, there have been few specialization in this field. They are:
- Furniture designer
- Product designer
- Automotive designer
- Packaging designer
- Toy designer
- And many more..
What is the different with engineers? They also do the design?
Hmm.. not really. Most engineers came from technical field. They are very good in analytical, logical and maths. Engineers will collaborate with designers to come up with the technology and manufacturing aspect of the product.
For example of automotive design in Proton, engineers will come up with the solution to make the car runs smoothly. However, it is designer who will propose how the car will looks like.
“Many people choose cars based on the shape of the cars. In other words, they buy the car because it looks good. (Enzo Ferrari, 1967)”

These designers need to work hand-in-hand with engineers so the product will gain the most of both worlds

if a car built by a engineer solely, yes surely it will served it purpose but it will look so boring.
by the way, engineers are problems solvers.

I appreciate what you are saying about product design. People don’t stop to think about all the serious thought and design that goes into our everyday items. One great example is apple – in my opinion they have pushed design to the next level. Especially with the ipad.
