KLDW09 was held from to 28th March 2009 in Capsquare KL. It was the first ever design week event in Malaysia. We used to hear about Milan Design Week etc. I’m glad that arts and design awareness has reach another level of acceptance in Malaysia.
I’ve known about it months before through the website. Lucky because my project submission has been extended, that’s why I’ve got the chance to visit. So, I’ve asked my friend to accompany me to the event.

What is KLDW anyway?
According to KLDW website, the KLDW Festival is the 1st mega Creative Event of its kind to be organized right here in our proud capital of Kuala Lumpur. To be making its inaugural mark in KL soon, KLDW 2009 promises a wide mix of creative thoughts and eclectic ideas, of imaginative programmes and inspiring showcases, plus loads more under one grand event of “Show + Shine”, to showcase what we donʼt have, and to enhance what we do have
Capsquare KL
About 8 years back, I noticed that there was a construction site near Jalan Munshi Abdullah while waiting for the bus. Because of the KLDW, I’ve just realized that Capsquare is a brand new shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. Comparing to other malls, Capsquare is very small. Smaller than Ampang Point and Great Eastern Mall.
Eco-friendly Awareness
Eco-friendly, green design and environmental friendly is the in thing right now. To give awareness to the public about it, they organised a paper bag design exhibition. Some of them are quite creative in using recycle materials. The same product can be seen through my 2nd year juniors. Wonder who’s following whom?
Design Exhibition
In the first floor, there are exhibitions about photography from KLickr. Creative Hanging Photos Exhibition Display. Prepared by KLickr. Instead of mounting the photos on the wall, why not hang them and make ’em floating? Besides that, there are also some unique sculpture and lighting design exhibition on the other side.
Degree Project Exhibition
Actually, this is my main purpose when coming to KLDW09. I’m looking for some ideas in designing my final presentation layout. I’m quite impressed with some of the projects. I guess I’ll be sharing some technique in preparing presentation layout board in the next entry. Most of the exhibitors cames from private colleges. However, USM students also produced a good job.
My batch will be organizing degree show exhibition soon. I wonder if we can adapt some of the ideas from KLDW.
Creativity is everywhere
Here’s some of the interesting pictures during the event. I’m sorry for the low quality images. I forgot to charge my camera’s battery :P. For more pictures, check out my Flickr photostream.
Creative lighting design
3D newspaper collage of a face
Creative Tent
Edible art – its a cake and you can eat it!
If you want to see more pictures, feel free to visit my Flickr photostream!
To conclude, KLDW is a good pioneer event to upgrade the image of design industry in Malaysia. More interesting events can be organised throughout the week to make it better. I hope that next year KLDW will become better than this year.

Something interesting on education n PTPTN which i found in Star today
Give exemptions to top grads
By KAREN CHAPMAN
STUDENTS who obtain first class honours in their undergraduate degrees should be exempted from repaying their National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans.
Kedah Gerakan youth chief Tan Keng Liang in an open letter to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin dated Wednesday, said this would serve as recognition by the Government of the students’ academic excellence.
He said it would also be in line with the promotion of better quality undergraduates in local universities.
“The minister should also consider allowing a 30% discount for graduates when repaying their PTPTN loans if they obtain second class upper degrees,” he said in his open letter which was also distributed to the media.
Tan hoped Mohamed Khaled would consider the requests as before July 1, 2005, graduates who obtained first class honours could be exempted from the repayment of their loans, which has since been discontinued.
He said currently there were students who were given full scholarships to enter local universities before achieving any result and who might not perform up to expectation.
“It would be disappointing to see that Malaysian students who were not granted scholarships initially but who actually performed up to expectation, not being rewarded for their academic excellence,” he said.
In an immediate response, Mohamed Khaled said the Cabinet had decided on this matter about two years ago.
“We can only consider this when the financial situation of PTPTN is sustainable,” he said when contacted.
PTPTN chief executive officer Yunos Abd Ghani said the corporation was presently unable to consider the requests.
“The amount would be too much for the corporation to absorb,” he said.
On Tuesday, Mohamed Khaled had said the ministry was currently conducting research on how to ensure the sustainability of the PTPTN.
“If the PTPTN funds continue to operate as they are, we will have a RM42bil deficit by 2020,” he said.
hi cindy. thanx for the news cutting. I also hope that the government can give exemptions to top grads. There’s no different being a good or poor students anyway right now..

Though they seemed a little too reserved on stage, that really didn’t matter once they began playing.
